Pay it forward

It is so much better to give than to receive.

In 2008, Hurricane Ike changed my life as I knew it, irrevocably and without my permission or affirmation. But survival and recovery bring with them a unique qualification to empathize and, therefore, guide in the complicated recovery of the next person. In short, to pay it forward.

Today I am matching volunteers with people who need them in the tornado and Mississippi River flood areas.

To “adopt” a family or individual means helping them with whatever they need to recover. Maybe it’s doing some paperwork for them or finding them transportation or making sure they have their meds or getting the kids books for their new school or finding them an attorney. Whatever it is, you’ll use your network and ingenuity to help solve their problems at a time when being overwhelmed is the understatement of their life. In short, you’ll be their angel.

And often it’s just about lending an ear.

Can you commit to a year of being there for someone?

If you would like to adopt a person or family to help them navigate their recovery, or if you know someone who needs help, please email me at alicemelott@gmail.com.

This is something you can do to help without leaving home and without writing a check!
